What’s Up Next At DCPS - Issue #13 - March 13, 2026

Message from Administration

Happy March Break! Can you believe we’ve already reached the spring milestone? As the final bell rings this afternoon, we want to wish all of our students and families a restful, safe, and wonder-filled March Break. Whether you are heading off on a grand adventure or enjoying a cozy "staycation" right here at home, we hope you take this time to unplug, play, and recharge your batteries. We are so proud of the hard work our students have put into the term so far, and we can’t wait to hear all their stories when we return to the classroom on Monday, March 23rd.

We do have a couple of reminders to share.  We will have a busy week upon our return with #RockYourSocks Day on Tuesday, March 24, to recognize World Down Syndrome Day and a Walk to School Day on Wednesday, March 25.

We are sorry to share that we have to postpone our Movie Night scheduled for Thursday, March 26. One of the LCD projectors in the gym is currently out of commission, and we want to make sure the screen is working perfectly so everyone can actually see the movie! We’re working on a fix right now and will share a new date with you as soon as we have it. Thank you for being patient while we deal with this little technical hiccup!

We hope your week is unhurried and full of fun, and we look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces back at school for a busy and exciting spring!

World Down Syndrome Day - March 21, 2026 (March 24 @ DCPS)

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is officially recognized in Ontario and globally on March 21. The date itself is significant: the 21st day of the 3rd month was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. As this date falls during the March Break, we will recognize and celebrate it on Tuesday, March 24 with #RockYourSocks Day! Students and staff are encouraged to wear their brightest, most colourful, and mismatched socks. This campaign is a global symbol for WDSD because chromosomes are shaped like socks!

The purpose of World Down Syndrome Day is to bring awareness and advocacy for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of students with Down syndrome. Celebrating this day helps all students become more informed and inclusive, recognizing that our schools are strengthened by their diversity.

Walk to School Day - Wednesday, March 25, 2026

On Wednesday, March 25, our school is lacing up our sneakers (or pulling on our boots?) for Walk to School Day! We are encouraging all students and families to choose "active school travel"—walking, cycling, or wheeling—to help kickstart a healthy spring season.

According to Ontario Active School Travel, choosing to walk or wheel even just one day a week can make a massive difference for our kids and our community:

Why Walk?

  • Boost Brain Power: Physical activity is linked to improved learning, better attention at school, and higher test scores.
  • Happier Mornings: Walking helps reduce stress and anxiety, leaving students feeling refreshed and ready to start their day.
  • Safer Streets: Fewer cars in our school zone means less traffic congestion and better air quality for everyone.
  • Healthy Habits: It helps students meet the goal of 60 minutes of daily physical activity, building heart health and strong bodies.

How to Participate

If you live too far to walk the whole way, try a "Drive to 5"—park just five minutes away from the school and walk the rest of the distance. It’s a great way to avoid the busy kiss-and-ride line while still getting those active minutes in!

Let’s fill our sidewalks and show our school spirit on March 25.
